EVALUATION - Question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

I have learnt a lot since we filmed our preliminary task. As this is my first year of studying Media Studies in school I have never worked with any of the equipment, editing programs or generally the thematic before. As the camerawoman of our production I mainly concentrated on the work with angles, atmospheres, tracks, cranes and cameras. However, through the creation of my v-log and through being assistant editor, I am familiar with the editing process as well. Since the preliminary task I feel as though my camera work has improved a lot, eliminating the camera shakes we had in our film and correcting mistakes before they were made. Especially in the organisation we, as a group, improved a lot compared to the beginning and learnt some valuable lessons about teamwork.

After finishing our media horror product, I feel as though we have learnt a great deal in creating media. At first I found learning the shots and angles was easy but when I got round how to do it, it was hard to put them into practice without camera shake and keeping the object or character in frame. Looking at our preliminary task, we have improved with our shots and editing. Back then we did not use all the editing techniques as we were not confident to put them in whereas in our final product we have used more. The costumes and make up improve from our preliminary task from being casual to our final product with fake-blood and black contact lenses.

For our preliminary task we did not use the codes and conventions of a horror film, as we did not intent to create fear. In our final product we tried to use as many codes and conventions in our psychological horror as it is aimed at an age 15 plus audience, whereas our preliminary task had no specific age specification or codes and conventions.

For our preliminary task we did not have a detailed storyline or shotlist as it was not going to be seen by our audience. For our final product, on the other hand, we needed to organise our ideas into a shotlist and timeline. We split the different jobs editor, director, make-up, costume, camera work and promotion, to make our work more efficient and successful, as everyone only did what she liked, in my case it is the camera work.

Over Again
After a long discussion we decided to overthrow our final idea and start again from the beginning. Our story Death to Death turned out to be not easy to follow and not understandable for the viewer. Especially this close to the exams it is a risky decision but we hope it turns out to be for the best.

Gossip- film

This is the final version of our Preliminary Task, Gossip. You can clearly see we followed the 180 degree rule throughout the whole film and even added a jump cut in between to create the idea of a continuing motion which links up with our match on action. The shot/ reverse shot is represented in the conversation on the end which makes the situation of a nice small talk very clear.

Gossip
As we are heading towards our final exams, we are working on our Preliminary Task. Our task is to show our filming and editing skills in a short film, using: match on action shot, shot/reverse shot and the 180-degree rule. We decided to name our short film Gossip.

The Ring

We watched The Ring in the lessons and got the Task to make some research on Codes and Conventions Symbolic/Macro Elements with an example film. So I chose The Cabin in the Woods.

Play Me the Song of Death

Finally finished!!!! And we are very proud.

Play Me The Song Of Death

At the moment we are working on our first self-made film "Play Me the Song of Death”. As we are four people and everyone lives in different directions it is not that easy to find a place and time that suits everybody. But we decided to film over at Sirin’s place as she has the perfect location/house to film a horror movie at, it's big, dark and lonely.

Our first film

Hurray! We are doing our first “big” film. We got the task to make a horror or thriller movie that has to last at least 2 minutes and a maximum of 4 minutes. We cannot wait to start!!!
